User setup on windows

Article needs peer review

Summary

  • To install and license XSI, you must be an Administrator.
  • To run XSI, you can be a Restricted user (Users), Standard user (Power Users), or an Administrator.
  • To install SPDL-based and other older, non-self-installing plug-ins, you must be a Standard user or an Administrator. These extended privileges are also required for any user connecting, for the first time, to a workgroup that contains SPDLs, as well as each time a new SPDL is added to that workgroup.

However, it is recommended that you log on as a valid Windows User, and not as Administrator. This will ensure that your installation isn't inadvertently compromised, and that your work is not at risk when any future updates of the program(s) are performed. It will also ensure that files such as layouts and project lists, which are saved in the users home directory, are properly protected.

Steps

  1. Log on as Administrator.
  2. From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel
  3. Double-click Administrative Tools
  4. In new pop-up window, double-click Computer Management
  5. In the left hand side panel's Explorer type view, expand System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users
  6. Right-click on the main (right hand side) panel and select New User...
  7. Enter the requested information (i.e. username, password, etc.)
  8. Click Create and continue until all users are created
  9. Right-click on each one of newly created users and select Properties.
  10. If required, access the Member Of tab to add each user to specific groups (i.e. Administrators, etc.). Go to the Profile tab, to ensure that the user has a home directory.
  11. In the Local Path text box, enter %homedrive%users\%username%

A directory will have been created under %homedrive%users that contains the same name as the user's login account.
