Shapes: Breaking the shape relation to objects

Summary
You want to break the relation to the original meshes so that the target mesh reflects the original shapes but no longer references the original shapes.
Steps
In th explorer, expand the object being shape animated and navigate to the appropriate cluster. Expand the shape keys involved and select all the "copy shape" operators then "freeze" them.
More Information
You can now delete the original meshes and the target will retain the shape.
