SPDL: What happens to spdls after reinstalling xsi

Article needs peer review

Question

Part I:

What happens to SPDLs I registered after I re-installed SOFTIMAGE|XSI. For example, I created a custom parameter set, registered the SPDL on a drive volume other than the SOFTIMAGE|XSI installation path. If I re-install SOFTIMAGE|XSI, will the custom parameter set still point to the original SPDL installation location.

Part II:

If I register SPDLs in a location accessible by multiple users, will Users working on other systems be able to use these SPDLs.

Here is another common scenario: You create a custom parameter set or a scripted operator that uses SPDL, and you want all Users to be able to use the custom parameter set (e.g. when a scene is loaded containing a custom parameter set). How can this be done?

Answer

Answer I:

Each SPDL must be registered on the local machine you are working on. If you are re-installing SOFTIMAGE|XSI, then the SPDL you previously registered will not be registered anymore. There are two options to consider when re-registering SPDLs:

  • Package your custom parameter set as an Add-on, and install the add-on after you re-install SOFTIMAGE|XSI. After installing the new version of SOFTIMAGE|XSI, you can then execute the following command from a SOFTIMAGE|XSI command prompt to register the differents spdl:
 XSI -i [spdl file]

Answer II:

If you have a scene containing a custom parameter set with a SPDL, you then need to register the SPDL on the machine you want to load your scene from. Again there are two options:

  • You can share an SPDL via the Workgroup application path. In this case you will need to copy your SPDL to your workgroup location, and register the SPDL from that very same location. Remember, the workgroup location must be a SOFTIMAGE|XSI directory structure (i.e. your SOFTIMAGE|XSI User Softimage folder), in order that the SPDL can be found in either of these locations:
 [workgroup path]-Application-Spdl

or

 [workgroup path]-Addons-[subfolder(optional)]-Application-Spdl
  • Package a preset of your custom parameter set as an Add-on, and install that Add-on on the machines you want to load your scene from.
