SLP Licensing

6.02 includes the new Softimage Licensing Protocol (SLP).

SLP replaces ETX (on Windows only; ETX is still used on Linux).

Like ETX, SLP allows you to activate your license on up to two computers.

When you install the 6.02 (Foundation or Student/Teacher), Setup will automatically upgrade your license from ETX to SLP. This requires that you have an active Internet connection.

We here at Softimage Support strongly recommend upgrading from ETX to SLP.

Why upgrade to SLP?

Because it is better than ETX. Too many things can go wrong with ETX licensing.

SLP does not have all the hardware dependencies that ETX does. You can change your network connections, and your SLP license will keep working. With ETX, on the other hand, changing network connections usually invalidates your license because the license server starts using the wrong network adapter card to identify your computer.

SLP is still bound to your computer. But you can deactivate your license before you make any big hardware or OS changes, and then reactivate your license again after.

Why would I want to deactivate my license?

For example, suppose you want to reinstall Windows. To do this, here's what you do:

  1. Deactivate your SLP license.
  2. Reinstall Windows.
  3. Activate your SLP license.

Or suppose you buy a new computer. Then you would do this:

  1. Deactivate your SLP license on your old computer.
  2. Activate your SLP license on your new computer.

Or, if you insist on changing your computer name, deactivate your license first.

How do I deactivate my license?

Note. Only SLP licenses can be deactivated.

To deactivate your license:

  1. Start the License Manager (click Start > All Programs > Softimage Products > License Manager).
  2. In the menu bar, click Server > Deactivate.
  3. In the License Deactivation dialog box, enter your softimage.com login name and password, and your registration code.
  4. Click Deactivate.

How do I reactivate my license?

  1. Start the License Manager (click Start > All Programs > Softimage Products > License Manager).
  2. Click Get License.
  3. Under Registration Code Activation, enter your softimage.com login name and password, and your registration code.
  4. Click Deactivate.

What XSI editions use SLP ?

SLP is used by the Windows versions of the Trial, XSI Foundation, and XSI Student/Teacher.
