Installing the loopback adapter on windows

The TCP/IP service is required for the SPM license server to communicate with the clients running XSI. TCP/IP should be installed on your system before running the XSI Setup program. If you choose not to install TCP/IP first, you can still install XSI but you will not be able to run it until you install TCP/IP.

In the case of a Windows-based standalone machine (with no network adapter and, therefore, no TCP/IP service installed and running), you can install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter to allow for this comunication. The loopback adapter is used for those machines with no network card but need network protocols and other network related items. XSI cannot run if the TCP/IP protocol is not installed.

Steps

Note: If you are using Windows XP, these steps assume that you are running the Windows Control Panel in Classic View rather than Category View.

  1. Open the Add Hardware control panel applet (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add Hardware).
  2. Click "Yes, I have already connected the hardware", and then click Next.
  3. In the list click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
  4. Click "Install the hardware I manually select from a list", and then click Next.
  5. Click Network adapters, and then click Next.
  6. In the Manufacturer box, click Microsoft.
  7. In the Network Adapter box, click Microsoft Loopback Adapter, and then click Next.
  8. Click Finish.

You should then configure the device with an IP address etc. If you select DHCP it will use an address 169.254.x.x/16 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0) as no DHCP server can be contacted due to the lack of network connectivity.
