Fake motion blur does not appear to work in softimage xsi v30

Question

My particle scene uses the Particle_sparks material shader, and I have selected the Fake Motion Blur parameter. However, when I render the scene, no motion blur effect takes place. What am I doing wrong? Can you use the Particle_sparks shader in XSI v3.0?

Answer

Starting with XSI version 3.0, particles are treated in the same way as any other object in XSI in that particle clouds can now have motion blur properties. Because particles with motion blur properties render in the same way as any other object, there was no need to keep the Fake Motion Blur option that was available in the Particle_Sparks shader in previous versions.

However, you can work in version 3.0 as you did with previous versions using the Fake Motion Blur method. Follow these steps:

  1. In the render tree, choose Nodes > Particle > More and select the Material-Particle_sparks shader.
  2. Connect the outputs to the Surface and Shadow inputs on the particle's Material node.
  3. Load the Volume-Particle_vol_sparks in the same way, and connect its outputs to the Volume input on the particle's Material node.
  4. Open the particle cloud's property editor and set the Execution State to Standard Caching so that PTP files are cached.
  5. Save the scene and then reload it.

Note: The only way to control the parameters for the particle Sparks shader (fake motion blur, etc.) is from the shader's property editor. Activate the Fake Motion Blur parameter and modify the Forward and Backward options as usual.

The particle Sparks shader is neither exposed in the XSI interface nor supported for XSI version 3.0.
