FAQ: Cannot Generate License Request with New Dongle

Note: This article refers to older versions of SPM and the License Manger. The information below may be out of date or may not apply to the most recent version of the software.

Problem

Your old dongle went bad, and you just got your replacement dongle. You plug it in, start Lictools, click Generate Request, and you get an error that looks like this:

******** Generating key request code ********
SPM_FATAL ERROR (C:\WINNT\system32\spm\spm_keyib.exe) :
  Wrong SYSTEM-ID for SPM license keyfile "C:\WINNT\system32\spm\spm-kf"
      KeyDataBase:  dongle_host -0011C970XX040XXX53XX48-SI0  !=
            SysID:  dongle_host -X029XXXX20XXXXX8531XX8-SI0

Solution

Before you generate the request, right-click the Softimage Licensing Tool (Lictools) window title bar and then click Rename Key DB.

Explanation

The Wrong SYSTEM-ID error happens because you have an existing license, and this existing license is for a different dongle. Before you can generate a new request with your new dongle, you need to rename (or delete) the existing license.

Every dongle has a unique ID, and this dongle ID is part of the license.

Your license is stored in a file named spm-kf (.spm-kf on Linux). This file is known as the "SPM license keyfile" or the "key database".

On Windows, the spm-kf file is a hidden file. To show hidden files in Windows Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options, and on the View tab, click the Show hidden files and folders options.

On Windows, the spm-kf file is located in %WINDIR%\system32\spm. On Linux, the file is located in /var/spm.
