Error - Your registration code is valid, but your request code is for a dongle

Problem

When you try to activate your license, you get this error:

Error: Your registration code is valid, but your request code is for 
a dongle. You cannot activate your license with a dongle: you can 
activate your license only with a hardware system ID. The DONGLE_TYPE 
setting in the SPM configuration file specifies whether to use a dongle 
or a hardware system ID.
 
If the computer is not a license server 
for other XSI workstations, then it may be configured to use a dongle. 
To change the configuration, start the License Manager, click Edit 
Config File, and change DONGLE_TYPE to SLP (ETX if v6.01 & older version). 
Then generate a new request code and submit your license request 
again. 

If the computer is a license server, you must  either activate 
your license on a different computer or move the dongle and its 
licenses to a different computer.

Solution

Usually, the only thing you can tell for sure from this error message is that an error occurred. The actual error is probably not what is described in the message.

If you do not have a dongle, then try to generate a request code. That will give you a more meaningful error message.

To generate a request code:

• Click Manage Key Database.
• Click Generate Request Code.
