Cannot animate particle emission rate when said parameter is connected to a weight map

I connected a weight map to my Particle emission rate parameter. I also keyed the emission rate parameter, and when I re-simulate and play back the scene, I cannot control the emission rate, as the emission rate is set to a fixed constant value. What am I doing wrong?

This is a know problem. One cannot at the present time set expressions and/or animate the Particle emission rate when the said parameter is connected to a weight map.
